A Personal story of a patient who lost some vision from stress. Last month, Dr. Desai saw a patient who experienced vision loss from stress. Stress can cause the cells of the macula (which provides sharp vision) to detach, causing fluid to build up and cause some loss of vision. This particular patient works in a highly stressful job and had multiple bouts of macular detachment. As a result, he lost the ability to see fine details. The moral of the story is stress is dangerous for your vision! Some techniques to relieve stress is yoga and meditation. My wife takes yoga class with many people whose stress is relieved by taking this class. If stress is a daily part of your life, please save your vision by relaxing with yoga and meditation! ..….By Dr. Jay S. YOU LEGISLATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROMOTING THE DIABETIC EPIDEMIC SWEEPING THROUGH AMERICA. DIABETES IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF BLINDNESS! A few years ago, an obesity researcher at the University of Washington named Adam Drewnowski wanted to figure out why it is that the most reliable predictor of obesity in America today is a person’s wealth. For most of history, the poor have typically suffered from a shortage of calories, that often kept them thin. The question is why is it today that people with the least amount of money or those trying to budget their food costs are the ones most likely to be overweight? Drewnowski found that shopping the middle of the supermarket could buy the Most Calories for the dollar spent. Drewnowski found that a dollar could buy 1,200 calories of cookies or potato chips but only 250 calories of carrots. Looking for beverages, he discovered that his dollar bought 875 calories of soda but only 170 calories of orange juice. In essence, processed foods cost more than Raw Foods of equal energy content! The NY Times reported that a TWINKE, a highly complicated, high-tech piece junk food, involving no fewer than 39 ingredients, many themselves elaborately manufactured, as well as the packaging and a hefty marketing budget could cost less than a bunch of Carrots! The question was now, how could this be so? For the answer, you need look no farther than the farm bill. This Bill determines which crops will be subsidized and which will not, and in the case of the carrot and the Twinkie, the farm bill as currently written offers a lot more support to the cake than to the root. U.S. agricultural policy has been designed in such a way as to promote the overproduction of five commodities, especially corn and soy which make up Twinkies! The Times reported that the current farm bill helps commodity farmers by cutting them a check based on how many bushels they can grow, rather than, say, by supporting prices and limiting production, as farm bills once did. The result? A food system awash in added sugars (derived from corn) and added fats (derived mainly from soy), as well as dirt-cheap meat and milk (derived from both). By comparison, the farm bill does almost nothing to support farmers growing fresh produce. A result of these policy choices is on stark display in your supermarket, where the real price of fruits and vegetables between 1985 and 2000 increased by nearly 40 percent while the real price of soft drinks (a k a liquid corn) declined by 23 percent. The reason the least healthful calories in the supermarket are the cheapest is that those are the ones the farm bill encourages farmers to grow. This very same farm bill helps determine what sort of food your children will have for lunch in school tomorrow. The school-lunch program began at a time when the public-health problem of America’s children was undernourishment, so feeding surplus agricultural commodities to kids seemed like a win-win strategy. Today the problem is overnutrition, but a school lunch lady trying to prepare healthful fresh food is apt to get dinged by U.S.D.A. inspectors for failing to serve enough calories; if she dishes up a lunch that includes chicken nuggets and Tater Tots, however, the inspector smiles and the reimbursements flow. The farm bill essentially treats our children as a human Disposall for all the unhealthful calories that the farm bill has encouraged American farmers to overproduce. America's children are now suffering from an Epidemic of Diabetes (as are many Adults too) and the cause is certainly part do to the farm Subsidy program. If you do not yet know, there is an epidemic of chidren with diabetes and NO FAMILY history to point to! It is their diet!; Because most of us live far from farming communities, this leaves our own representatives free to ignore the farm bill, and pretend this legislation is only affecting a handful of Midwestern legislators. Since we aren’t paying attention, they pay no political price for trading, or even selling, their farm-bill votes. It is time for all of us to consider what we are eating and what our children are eating and in the meantime tell YOUR REPRESENTATIVE that you want them to get involved in supporting a Farm Subisidy bill that subsidizes food for people and not for junk food manufacturers. …. Sugar! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! Our saliva contains many minerals. Those who experience a never ending build up on the backs of their front teeth will attest to that. If one is healthy the concentration of minerals (calcium and magnesium, etc.) in the saliva will be greater than the concentration of minerals on the tooth surface. When this is the case, there is a continual flow of minerals from saliva to the tooth surface and a rebuilding or remineralization of the enamel. However, if the concentration of minerals in the saliva is less than that of the tooth surface, then there is flow of minerals from the tooth surface to the saliva with a resulting demineralization or breakdown of the tooth surface. Every day we are exposed to something that alters the mineral content of our saliva. That thing is sugar and refined carbohydrates. When the intake of sugars and simple carbohydrates increases, the mineral content of saliva will decrease. Fluoride is suggested to protect the teeth by making them harder. While the use fluoride is recommended by much of the dental profession, there are many dentists who believe fluoride is unhealthy and dangerous. (This is a discussion for another time.) We believe that a healthy diet can achieve better health without the use of fluoride. Teeth can also be protected by the reduction and elimination of sugar and refined carbohydrates. How can one use fluoridated water and toothpaste and not be concerned about their diet? Did you know that studies promoting the benefits of fluoride have been funded by the Mars candy company? One article has even suggested that fluoride releasing pellets be bonded to teeth to insure ongoing protection. The message seems to be, “Don’t change your diet, the fluoride will protect you.” The development of good nutritional choices and habits needs to start early? The belief that a child can have their treats (candy, soda, etc.), as long as they brush their teeth, is not in their best interests. Diabetes and osteoporosis are two of the most prevalent diseases affecting our society and are responsible for a significant part of our health care costs. Yet both of these diseases are related to diet. They may actually be prevented by a proper diet. The dietary habits developed in childhood can protect you or make you more susceptible as an adult. There is an alarming increase in childhood obesity. Consumption of foods providing inadequate nutrition is common. Chronic ailments usually not seen till middle age are now prevalent in teenagers. Certainly it takes more time and energy to instill good dietary habits especially when children are exposed to fast foods, advertisements on TV, and peer pressure. It is easier and faster to use prepared foods, sugared breakfast cereals, and unhealthy “treats”. The best gift we can give ourselves and our family is the gift of health. Why not devote the time and energy to take charge of your health. .The Hindin Center for Whole Health Dentistry 845-357-1595 http://www.hindincenter.com/ |

Tai Chi: More than just movement but Physical Medicine Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them
So what we first assume is a gentle, calming exercise can actually have a profound influence on health. Do not underestimate the simple movements as boring or too slow. Add this practice to your health regimen if you want to make major health improvements ........By Kenneth R Hoffman D.Ac, L.Ac, CCH http://www.arcadianaturalmedicine.com/ 203-740-9301 |

Emotional Freedom Technique Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an energy therapy that is easy to learn and delivers rapid results. EFT has its foundation in the 4000 year old Eastern philosophies that are blended with 20th century knowledge. According to its developer, Gary Craig, it is “an emotional version of acupuncture” without the needles. It has shown remarkable success with issues like overeating, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addiction, phobias, job performance and more. Albert Einstein taught us in the 1920s that everything in the universe, including us, is made of energy. Eastern cultures knew that and described the energy meridians, a complex network of channels that course the length of our bodies. The life force, or qi, flows through these meridians. The Chinese identified specific points along these meridians and mapped out their impact on specific body areas and emotions. As noted in the EFT Discovery statement, “The cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” EFT takes this knowledge and taps on nine of the meridian endpoints to create emotional change with little to no discomfort. Yes, even with “the Big Stuff.” Using the same technique, physiological change is possible as well, as seen in the resolution of pain or headaches, for instance. According to Craig, “Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pain and illnesses.” The process starts with the “set up” which lines up the client’s energy system to be most receptive to treatment. It is a simple series of taps on the “karate chop” part of the hand done while repeating an affirmation three times. Unlike simple affirmations used in many treatment forms, the EFT statement contains a negative phrase first (stating the issue), followed by the positive phrase. For example, a person afraid of public speaking may begin an EFT session with “Even though I feel anxious in front of a group, I completely and totally accept myself.” This affirmation and slight variations of it, known as the reminder, are repeated while continuing to tap on the remaining meridian endpoints. Those basic points are on the head, face, chest and under the arm. EFT saves time and money as clients may experience relief in as little as two sessions. In addition, it involves no pills, no needles, no surgery and no side effects, except mild fatigue when large energy blocks are moved. EFT produces remarkable results with simplicity. .................by..Marcy Kniffin LCSW RMT .http://www.mindbodyputnam.com/ 845-309-4571 |

Can Vitamin "C" Cure Heart Disease? The Search for Causes Beyond Cholesterol Sounds too easy, right? Yet, as Thomas Levy, MD writes in his book, Stopping America’s #1 Killer, the case for the strategy of lowering cholesterol is actually pretty thin, and supporting your body with sufficient doses of Vitamin C daily can go a long way in the fight to reduce your risk of heart disease. How does that work? Here it is, in a nutshell: Cholesterol is an important component of cells, and actually plays a key role in the process of tissue repair. Vitamin C plays a significant role in the maintenance of connective tissue. Everyone who’s ever been in the British Navy knows that the sailors were called “limeys” because it was discovered that limes, high in Vitamin C content, could prevent the development of scurvy, a dreaded Vitamin C deficiency characterized by bleeding gums and eventual death. Dr. Levy suggests that a sub-clinical form of scurvy occurs when insufficient levels of Vitamin C are maintained, and micro-bleeding occurs in the arterial walls, much the same as it would in the vessels of the gums during full-blown scurvy. Luckily, our wise bodies are prepared for such levels of minor malnutrition. They repair the inside of those arteries with…cholesterol! So, the plaque that we develop in our arteries is actually the body’s first stage of repair! Is it possible that the process of arterial breakdown can be prevented with proper intake of Vitamin C? Again, I refer you to Dr. Levy’s website, <TomlLevyMD.com>. I also invite you to investigate <livonlabs.com> for more information on highly bio-available Vitamin C, encapsulated in lecithin, which helps to lower…cholesterol! .................by Perry M. Relax using Breathing as Meditation In Buddhist and
yogic traditions, people claim to have reached an enlightened state by doing
nothing more than paying attention to the rising and falling of their breath.
What easier way could there be to reach such a state? Especially since
breathing - following the ebb and flow of your breath - is an intrinsic part of
meditation. By paying attention to your breath, you will rapidly change your
state of consciousness, begin to relax, and slowly detach from ordinary awareness.
Try to focus on the dimensionless point between your in-breath and out-breath,
and glimpse the elements of enlightenment in that space. After a treatment session at Wholistic Physical Therapy it is common for us to offer you to listen to an audio program whilst enjoying some complimentary moist heat. One of these programs is narrated by John Barnes, the founder of the Myofascial Release Approach used at Wholistic Physical Therapy. It is 15 minutes long and incorporates Jacobsonian Relaxation exercises contracting and relaxing muscle groups. Diaphragmatic Breathing has been scientifically proven to lower blood pressure and normalize levels of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. There have been articles published in peer reviewed journals such as the Journal of Hypertension. In fact it is so effective that a company has produced a device that plays soothing music and trains you to breathe with this method. It will cost you over $300 though! See www.resperate.com. Weight Gain and PregnancyI get asked frequently, how much should one gain in Pregnancy. Usually women are concerned with too much weight gain, but at the same time, don't want to gain too little and harm the baby. This artcle gives good guidelines regarding common amounts of weight gain during pregnancy. It is VERY VERY important that women remember that during a pregnancy, it is vitally important to eat plenty of protein, in fact, protein at every meal. Lack of protein leads to many many problems including diabetes, too muchweight gain, bloating, edema, swelling, high blood pressure and premature labor. The recommended weight gain for a woman of normal weight is 25 lb (11.3 kg) to 35 lb (15.9 kg). A gain of 30 lb (13.6 kg) usually consists of the following: · The baby weighs 7.5 lb (3.4 kg). · The placenta weighs 1.5 lb (0.7 kg). · The amniotic fluid weighs 2 lb (0.9 kg). · The uterus weighs 2 lb (0.9 kg). · Breast tissue weighs 2 lb (0.9 kg). · Excess blood and fluids weigh 8 lb (3.6 kg). · Fat weighs 7 lb (3.2 kg). You can expect to gain more if you are carrying twins. If you are overweight, your ideal goal is less than the average weight gain, 15 lb (6.8 kg) to 25 lb (11.3 kg). If you are underweight, it is best to gain 28 lb (12.7 kg) to 40 lb (18.1 kg). Ideally, you will gain weight slowly over the entire pregnancy: 0 lb (0 kg) to 4 lb (1.8 kg) during the first trimester· 1 lb (0.5 kg) a week during the second and third trimesters If you stop gaining weight for more than 2 weeks, or if you gain weight faster than these recommendations, consult your health professional. Preventative techniques to reduce risk of Age Related Macular
Degeneration The macula is the delicate tissue in the back of the eye that is responsible for sharp vision. When there damage to the macula, one is left with a permanent reduction of vision. Smoking is a proven cause of Macular Degeneration. Patients who are females of Northern European ancestry with light colored eyes tend to be more prone to this. One reason is that they lack pigment in the macula to protect this structure from UV light damage. Patients who have a high body mass index (BMI) also tend to have lower amount of pigment in the Macula. Another study done by Massachusetts Eye and Ear correlated increased risk of ARMD with elevated C-Reactive Protein. C-Reactive Protein is an indicator of inflammation usually caused by cardiovascular disease. The best way to preserve your vision to reduce the risk of getting Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) includes: 1) Increase Lutein intake thru multivitamins. Egg yolks are another excellent source of Lutein 2) Lose weight if one has a high BMI. 3) Wear sunglasses and hat with a brim outdoors. 4) Consume more omega 3 fatty acids (found in oily fish). Some studies suggest that increased fish consumption decreases chance of ARMD. 5) Control Hypertension-some studies have correlated hypertension with ARMD. 6) If one's C-Reactive Protein is elevated, exercise and work with physician to reduce this level. 7) Finally, don't smoke or use any tobacco product! ..….By Dr. Jay S. BAYER IS A DANGEROUS COMPANY AS ARE ITS PRODUCTS I have warned my patients that Bayer is producing literature that ASPIRIN is a miracle drug for preventing strokes and heart attacks. NOTHING could be further from the truth. We have seen clinical evidence that Bayer's Aspirin (all aspirin and many other over the counter pain relievers) causes bleeding in the eyes and logically elsewhere in the body and there is evidence so show that aspirin also causes macular degeneration. See this video, recommended by Dr Joseph Mercola, D.O., for some excellent information about this dangerous drug company: Please take the time to view this video. If you personally believe you need to take a blood thinner because of ads you have seen or friends advice, consider taking a teaspoon of cod liver oil daily (Nordic Natural's makes a high quality product). It not only thins the blood to reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks but it also: Improves Cholesterol, Reduces Join Inflammation (arthritis pain), Prevents Dry Eyes, Prevents dry skin and reduces the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration! If your physician has strongly recommended aspirin, discuss this option with him and share your concerns. Though cod liver oil is a blood thinner, for some few people with clotting problems or significant heart disease, blood thinners cannot be replaced by fish oils. In these cases allopathic medications must be used. …. By Dr Joseph A. Ross, Holistic Vision Care, Brewster NY http://www.drjoeross.com 845-279-6179 |

BALANCING FAMILY, WORK AND LIFE Part 1 Most families are familiar with the routine of rising early, getting ready for work, making lunches, getting children off to school, feeding the pet, mailing the bills, remembering the grocery list. And that’s just the morning schedule. The afternoon means dropping off and picking up children from their many activities, shopping for groceries, doing laundry, cooking dinner, helping with homework and the list goes on until you fall asleep on the sofa, exhausted. This hectic lifestyle often results in too little sleep, too little exercise and unhealthy meals on the run. Forget time to relax or have fun. It’s no wonder so many adults complain of stress. Unrelenting stress takes a toll on the body, mind and spirit. There may be frequent colds or high blood pressure or headaches, to name a few. Depression and weight gain are common. You’re worn out. How can you regain control? Try this fun mental exercise first. Imagine it is your 100th birthday and you are surrounded by family and friends. The media are there asking you to recall the 5 most memorable events of your life. Make a list of those 5 things and look for the theme. If having the cleanest house in the neighborhood isn’t on your “top 5”, then don’t agonize, spending hours each week at that chore. If having a close relationship with your children and spouse made the “top 5”, figure how many hours a week you are devoting to that value. That’s what life is about – living your value system. As the old saying goes, “No one makes a deathbed speech wishing they had spent more time at work”. If you are in synch with your values, you are spending your time wisely and with minimal stress. That sounds lovely and idealistic but simplifying your life can be done. In next month’s newsletter, there will be hints for doing just that – simplifying. .................by..Marcy Kniffin LCSW RMT .http://www.mindbodyputnam.com/ 845-309-4571 |

Eight Natural Remedies to Speed Healing For the full article, see http://www.wholisticphysicaltherapy.com/wellartic.htm When you get a bruise or acute injury, in addition to applying a cold compress (like an icepack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel) to the area for about 20 minutes to reduce the swelling, you can also use natural remedies to help speed up the healing. Bear in mind that these are all for external use, so don't drink or swallow these mixtures. For bruising: Aloe Vera, Calendula, Fenugreek, Garden Thyme, Onion, St. John's Wort, Apple Cider Vinegar, for detailed info on how to use these, visit the above link. Life can be a challenge. It is very rare where we are able to completely avoid the side effects of gravity unexpectedly taking us places we wish it didn't, and we suffer an acute trauma as a result of this collision. As a result, bruises are an all-too-common occurrence. They usually are the result of blood from damaged blood vessels deep beneath your skin collecting near the surface, which results in a black and blue discoloration.A bruise is cosmetic, so perhaps (?!) less of a concern. But under the bruise the cells are damaged and can become fibrotic, leading to hardness and pressure on the body. This is a source of FASCIAL RESTRICTION and can have far reaching “drag” like effects on the fascia (connective tissue) of the body. Homeopathic remedies like Arnica Montana will reduce inflammation and speed healing. Other topical salves like the Chinese liniment Zheng Gu Shui, Topricin, celadrin and Traumeel will also help. The key, like most areas of health, is proactive prevention. The reason why most people bruise is that their capillaries are too fragile and essentially are easily torn. One of the best ways to ensure that your capillaries remain strong and flexible is to make sure you have an excellent source of bioflavanoids. Typically, a well-rounded diet with nutritional-type-appropriate organic vegetables and fruits will be more than sufficient to provide all the micronutrients you will need to prevent bruising from all but the most severe traumas. However, if you already have a bruise, nature is full of simple, natural solutions for your health. Among them are the above listed herbal remedies that can help speed the healing process of your bruises so they go away faster. BUT remember the key is to avoid bruises in the first place by having loads of appropriate vegetables and fruits. I do not recommend taking acetaminophen for pain associated with common bruising, as it's been shown to cause liver damage with excessive or extended use. Ibuprofen and aspirin are no better, and taken together they can be a downright deadly combo. There's really no reason to succumb to taking these dangerous drugs for minor, everyday problems, as the risks far outweigh the benefits. .............by Scott van Niekerk P.T. http://www.wholisticphysicaltherapy.com/ 845-940-1050 |
